Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Philosophy


Purpose

Through eight years of living abroad in diverse locales such as Spain, Germany, South Korea, Iraq, Afghanistan, and extensive travels across the United States, I have gleaned profound insights into the intrinsic value of recognizing, appreciating, and encouraging diverse perspectives. These experiences have cultivated in me a deep respect for myriad ways to perceive, live, and collaborate with others. My journey of learning Spanish as a second language has not merely been a linguistic achievement but a transformative pathway into understanding and connecting with other cultures. This process has fostered a natural admiration and affinity, reinforcing my belief that embracing cultural diversity enriches our collective experience, fostering a more inclusive and empathetic society.

Direction

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) represent more than mere ideals; they are essential assets for organizational, business, and community growth that remain underutilized all too often. Persistent social, political, cultural, and historical divides hamper our collective potential to flourish as a cohesive and dynamic society. Much like athletes relentlessly seeking an edge through new exercises, routines, or equipment, we must recognize DEI as vital resources we can no longer afford to overlook. These are the keys to unlocking our full potential and enhancing our communal resilience and creativity.

In my role as an educator, I actively promote an environment where diversity is not merely acknowledged but celebrated. Emphasizing the multifaceted aspects of diversity—be it diversity of thought, background, identity, origin, or destination—I strive to accentuate the strengths and advantages that arise from a rich tapestry of perspectives.

In leading a classroom, the selection of materials offers a prime opportunity to infuse diversity into the learning experience. Whether it is textbooks, supplementary readings, artworks, historical vignettes, or scholarly works, I invest time and effort to incorporate authors, artists, historians, and scholars who hail from varied backgrounds, affiliations, and cultures. By highlighting these diverse sources, I create opportunities for students (and myself) to challenge assumptions and foster a sense of connection. This enables a broader range of students to recognize reflections of their heritage and personal identity within significant and influential figures, thereby enriching their educational journey and fostering a more inclusive and empathetic academic environment.

Motivation

Actively, intentionally, and consistently championing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion establishes a vibrant and welcoming learning environment where students are encouraged to delve into and reflect upon their own backgrounds as well as those of their peers. Within this space, every subject and class becomes a platform for nurturing future organizational, business, and community leaders. It cultivates a recognition of the intrinsic strength derived from DEI, fostering a generation equipped to harness these principles for the betterment of our global society.
